White
Cupboard Inn, Woodstock, VT. Though this does not show a ski lift or
skiers I felt it was important to include as the White Cupboard Inn was
where the first tow rope in the U.S. was installed in 1934. It was originally
called a "Ski-Way" but was renamed "Ski-Tow" in 1935. The tow was driven by
the rear wheel of a Ford Model A. |

In
January, 1934, on this pasture hill of Clinton Gilbert's farm, and
endless-rope tow, powered by a Model "T" Ford Engine, hauled skiers uphill
for the first time. This ingenious contraption launched a new era in
winter sports. |
