The Balsams Wilderness

Dixville Notch, New Hampshire

2001-2002 Trail Map

The Balsams Ski Area is connected to the Balsams Wilderness Resort  in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.  It is a relatively small area with 1000' verticle drop and 13 trails, but it is a neat little area.  I went there during the 2001-2002 season after a week long major ice event. The grooming crew did a terrific job of getting the area into optimal skiing condition.  Skiing was great!  I had been to Orford the day before (which isn't that far from there) and it was quite scratchy.  I loved the old center pole chair they had and the lodge was rather nice as well.  I understand that over the summer of 2002 they installed additional chairs, but I did not get back there this season.   For now they have kept the center-pole riblet double. In a way I hope they never remove it, there aren't many of them left.  The ski area is open to the public and not reserved for resort guests only.

Here is a Press release about the changes that occured in the summer of 2002.
